Social media agency in Belgium: when yes, when no, and what it costs
27 May 2026
Not every business needs an agency. Here's when an agency is the right choice, when a freelancer or AI tool is a better fit, and what you're really paying for.
Hiring a social media agency feels like the "serious" step. Professional marketing at last, a dedicated team, structure in your communications. But for a great many Belgian businesses, an agency is no longer the smartest choice in 2026. In this article: when it is the right call, when it isn't, and what you really need to know.
When an agency is the right choice
An agency has a genuine advantage over freelancers and tools in four situations:
1. Your marketing budget is €1,000+ per month
An agency only becomes cost-effective when you have enough budget to make use of their structure. Below €1,000/month you typically get a junior employee with limited time — in that case, a good freelancer or AI tool will serve you better.
2. Your positioning is complex
Luxury brands, B2B service providers, specialised products, international audiences. An agency has the strategic capacity to find the right tone here — something an AI tool cannot yet do flawlessly.
3. You want no involvement whatsoever
Some business owners want one monthly report and nothing more. An agency provides that distance — you don't need to approve anything, come up with anything, or share anything.
4. You run a lot of paid campaigns
Facebook Ads, LinkedIn Ads, TikTok Ads. This is where strategic agency experience really shows — your ads perform better, you learn faster what works. An agency with advertising expertise often pays for itself.
When an agency is the wrong choice
In other situations, an agency is more of a hindrance than a help.
1. You're a sole trader or small SME
1–10 employees. Operating locally or regionally. No complex positioning. For you, an agency is almost always overkill — you're paying for structure you don't need.
2. Your brand lives on personal nuance
An artisan baker, a local hair salon, a small boutique. Here, the person behind the brand is what sells. An agency juggling 30 other clients cannot capture your personal voice sufficiently — no matter how good they are.
3. You don't want a 12-month contract
Most agencies work with annual contracts or a minimum of 6 months. If you want the flexibility to switch — for example, because you're still testing what works — you'll be locked in.
4. You focus mainly on organic content (no ads)
If you have no advertising budget, the biggest advantage of an agency disappears. Writing and scheduling posts can be done differently today.
What does an agency really cost?
Full breakdown in our cost guide. Short version:
- Small agency / 1–2 channels: €800 – €1,200 per month
- Mid-size / 3–4 channels: €1,200 – €1,800 per month
- Premium / full strategy: €1,800 – €2,500+ per month
Plus often hidden costs:
- Setup fee: €500 – €2,000 one-off
- Photography: €300 – €800 per month extra
- Advertising budget: on top of the above (typically €300+/month)
- Extra revisions: often billed per hour after 2 rounds
How do you recognise a good Belgian agency?
Not all agencies are equal. Four questions to ask upfront:
- Who actually writes my posts? Ask about the team. Many agencies have posts written by juniors or interns — at €1,500/month, that's poor value. Ask for the name and background of the person who will genuinely be writing for you.
- How many other clients do you have in my sector? Too few (0) = they're learning on your dime. Too many (5+) = your posts will start to look alike. Sweet spot: 1–3 comparable clients.
- Which KPIs do you report on? "Likes and reach" is a red flag. "Conversions and new customers" is green. What they report on determines what they optimise for.
- How long do you work with a client on average? Under 6 months = clients are leaving (a bad sign). Over 24 months = they deliver consistent results.
The more affordable alternatives
For 80% of Belgian SMEs, an agency is not the right choice in 2026. Two alternatives:
A freelancer
€400 – €900 per month. More personal than an agency, often better quality per euro. Particularly suitable if you find someone with expertise in your sector.
An AI tool
€19 – €79 per month. Mature enough since 2024 to write in your voice. You approve every post before publication — so you retain 100% control. Promobuddy is one example of this.

Real examples from Belgium
Three businesses we worked with, and the choice that was right for them:
Bakkerij De Wolf (3 employees, 2 shops)
First tried a local agency (€1,200/month). Posts didn't feel like their business. Switched to an AI tool — 90 days later: +38% reach, 22 new regular customers, and €1,180/month in savings. Full case study here.
Architecture firm X (8 employees, B2B)
Works with a specialised LinkedIn agency (€1,800/month). Here it does pay off — LinkedIn leads are typically €30,000+ projects, so one client per year covers all costs.
Boutique Mode XYZ (1 owner, 1 shop)
Manages Instagram herself, uses an AI tool for Facebook. A hybrid model. It works for her because she enjoys creating Instagram content but finds Facebook tedious.
Conclusion
An agency is not an "upgrade" from doing it yourself — it's a different choice with different benefits and costs. For most Belgian SMEs, an AI tool or freelancer is the smartest starting option in 2026. An agency only becomes relevant as your marketing budget, complexity, and advertising ambitions grow.
